{"id":1321,"date":"2015-02-05T07:26:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T07:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.assipj.com.au\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2019-12-27T13:01:35","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T13:01:35","slug":"shared-history-honoured-veresdale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.assipj.com.au\/southsea\/shared-history-honoured-veresdale\/","title":{"rendered":"Shared history honoured at Veresdale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assipj.com.au\/southsea\/wp-content\/uploads\/shared-history-pakoa.jpg\" alt=\"Shared history honoured at Veresdale\" width=\"624\" height=\"482\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Emotions ran high on Saturday when a sculpture honouring the history between Australian South Sea Islanders (ASSI), the Mununjali community and Veresdale landholders was unveiled.<\/p>\n<p>The six metre high two-tonne sculpture was hand-crafted from a fallen 200 year-old iron bark log, that was found at Mt Lindesay, by artist Kakae Pakoa who lovingly worked on the project for three months.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pakoa said his design reflected the past, the present and the future of the area. \u201cThe footprints symbolise the walk the South Sea Islanders did from Redbank Plains to Beaudesert in 1863, when it took them two days to get here to start work,\u201d he said. \u201cThey also symbolise the future-moving forward and moving together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pakoa\u2019s wife Natalie said the unveiling of the sculpture reinforced the love and healing she felt after her community\u2019s history with the area was accepted and acknowledged by the Mununjali people. \u201cNow when I come to Beaudesert I feel love in my heart, it is home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Scenic Rim Regional Council Division Two Councillor Nadia O\u2019Carroll said it was a \u201cbrilliant piece of art\u201d and a wonderful addition to the region\u2019s cultural heritage.
